Introduction

The popular main rest camp of the park offers a wide variety of accommodation units to suit all tastes and plenty of activities to keep visitors busy.

A unique feature is the waterhole lookout point, floodlit at night, within the camp as well as the underground hide, allowing close encounters with wildlife at the waterhole. The evenings punctuated with the calls of lions, spotted hyenas and jackals while francolins and bokmakieries herald each dawn. Accommodation units are situated within easy walking distance of each other and of facilities such as the swimming pool, restaurant and shop. Bookings are made through Central Reservations.

Domkrag Guest House and Hapoor Guest House

These units overlook a floodlit water hole. The guest houses have two bedrooms with en suite bathrooms , airconditioners, living rooms and fully equipped kitchens. These units sleep up to 6 people.

Chalet with double sleeper couch, bathroom and kitchen

This type of accommodation can sleep either two adults and two children or three adults. The chalet is a bedsitter with two single beds and a sleeper couch, all in the same area. There are no separate bedrooms. The chalets are air conditioned, and have fully equipped kitchens and bathrooms (with bath and shower). Two chalets are adapted to accommodate paraplegics.

Semi-detached Chalet

This type of accommodation can only sleep two people. Each unit contains two single beds (together) with a shower, toilet and hand basin. The kitchenette is equipped with a bar-fridge, 2-plate stove, microwave oven, cutlery, crockery and cooking utensils. The units are airconditioned.

Cottages

This type of accommodation can only sleep two people. Each unit contains two single beds (together) with shower, toilet and hand basin. The kitchenette is equipped with a bar-fridge, 2-plate stove, microwave oven, cutlery, crockery and cooking utensils. This unit is not air-conditioned but is equipped with a fan.

Rondawel

These units overlook a floodlit water hole. This type of accommodation can only sleep two persons and contain two single beds (together), a shower, toilet, hand basin and fridge. The units are air conditioned and share a communal kitchen with a four plate electric stove (no oven) Cutlery, crockery. Cooking utensils are shared with the other huts.

Forest Cabin

This accommodation sleeps a maximum of 4 people. The hut is an open area with 4 single beds, a table and seating for four people. The units are equipped with a shower, toilet and hand basin. Each unit also has braai facilities, cutlery, crockery, cooking utensils and a fridge. Guest share a communal kitchen.

Family Chalet No. 16

This type of accommodation can sleep a maximum of 6 persons. This unit is made up of one bedroom with a double bed and a bedsitter area, comprising of two single beds and a sleeper couch. The bathroom leads off the bedsitter area. Each unit has an equipped kitchen and air conditioning.

Chalet No. 15

This chalet has two single beds (together) in an open plan area with a mini kitchen, shower, toilet and hand basin. The unit is air-conditioned.

Caravan Sites

Caravan sites are available, with communal ablution and kitchen facilities. Caravan sites are equipped with 220V power points and a wooden table and benches. A maximum of six persons, one caravan with a side tent and one vehicle or one auto villa or one motorised caravan will be permitted per site.

Camping Sites

Caravan and campsites are available, with communal ablution and kitchen facilities. Camp sites are equipped with 220V power points and a wooden table and benches. A maximum of six persons, one tent and one vehicle will be permitted per site.

Safari Tents

The tents have two single beds, bedding, towels, fan, fridge, braai and separate communal ablution facilities. (shower, toilet and basin). They can also use the big ablution block in the camping area which is equipped with a bath. A communal kitchen with two plate stoves, cutlery, crockery and cooking utensils is provided for each tent. These tents are situated inside the existing camping site area of the park next to the perimeter.

Facilities

The following facilities are available at the main rest camp:

• A fuel station selling petrol and diesel is available between 07:00 and 17:00.
• A shop selling curios, snacks and basic supplies is open between 08:00 and 18:00 (Please note: times vary according to season, please check with park staff).
• An al-la-carte restaurant is available in the main camp and is open for all meals from 07:00 to 22:00. Bookings are advisable, especially for dinner. Telephone: +27 (0)42 233 8674.
• A swimming pool is available for overnight visitors.
• A picnic and braai area is available for day visitors.
• The SASOL Red Bishop Bird Hide.
• The PPC Discovery Trail is accessible to all, including the visually and mobility-impaired.
• There is a public telephone and a post box near the reception. Post is collected for delivery every week day morning at 09:00. A post office is situated in the town of Addo, approximately 15km from the park.
• Credit cards are accepted for payment of accommodation, activities (except for the Alexandria Hiking trail and the Zuurberg horse trails), shop purchases and restaurant meals.
• A First National Bank with ATM is situated in the town of Addo, 15km from the park. Other banking facilities are located in the town of Kirkwood, 35km from the park and Port Elizabeth, 75km from the park.
• Underground wildlife viewing hide.

How to get there

Air

• The nearest domestic airport is in Port Elizabeth, 75km from the park. A number of hire car agencies have depots at the airport.
• International airports are situated at Johannesburg and Cape Town, with connecting flights to Port Elizabeth available.

Car hire

Directions from Port Elizabeth (PE)

Take the N2 highway towards Grahamstown. Take the turnoff to the left signposted “Motherwell” and “Addo Elephant National Park”. Turn left at the top of the off-ramp and proceed through Motherwell. Follow this road until you see the entrance to the park on the right. Distance PE to park - about 72km.

Alternative route from PE

Take the N2 highway towards Grahamstown and carry straight on until the N2 splits off to the left from the N10. Carry straight on, following the N10 towards Cradock/Cookhouse. Take the R342 to the left when you get to the intersection with Paterson on your right. This will be sign posted “Addo Elephant National Park”. Follow this road, looking out for the entrance to the park on your left.

Directions from Grahamstown

Take the N2 towards Port Elizabeth. Follow this road until you see the turnoff to the N10 towards Cradock/Cookhouse. Take this turnoff and Carry straight on, following the N10 towards Cradock/Cookhouse. Take the R342 to the left when you get to the intersection with Paterson on your right. Fauna and Flora

The main game area of the Park is home to the Big Five as well as antelope such as red hartebeest, eland, kudu, common duiker and grysbok.

Spotted hyena and Burchell’s zebra occur as well as warthog, vervet monkey, bushpig and small mammals. About 250 bird species occur in this area of the Park.

Addo’s main game area is covered by Albany Thicket. Patches of grassland are remnants of the farming activities that took place before land was incorporated into the Park.
